design dilemma

There is a slight possibility that we could upgrade from our hodge-podge hand-me-down/college life family room furniture and graduate to something a little more grown-up. I just don't know what direction to go into.

I like this:
and I also like this:

I love my 1950's vintage tablecloths with bright blues and yellows and reds. I like my girls' 1940s Basset shabby white twin beds (found at Salvation Army, no less). But I also go pitter patter for a slick, totally modern Ikea kitchen or living room. I love beach/cottage living, but also French country and also I pore over old house plans. If I could afford it I would love to fix up an old, old house. Maybe a Victorian or an arts and crafts bungalow.

So.....how do I know what direction to go into? Is it possible to put any of these styles together? I wish I had a better interior design brainwave going on, but I just don't. I know what I like when I see it (pretty much), but I am not sure how to put it together.

Add to that the minor consideration that I have children and there's a game changer right there. I need something that's not too delicate and can be cleaned.

Any ideas? Is it possible to have it all??

  1. Love 'em both but, I have two thoughts.
    1) Which couch do you want to curl up and read on?
    2) Consider Throw Pillows to "have it all." You can get the solid color couch and over the years you can change out the throw pillows to match your whim. Check these out.

  2. I don't know if you've ever been to aparment therapy or not but it can be really helpful for inspiration. Warning, may cause home envy. Every time I visit I end up wanting to repaint or buy a new lamp or invest in more art. So, don't say I didn't warn you.

  3. I say pick a neutral, easy to clean, comfy yet sleek couch. More along the lines of the first. That way you can easily change the room on a whim, whether it be pillows, paint, drapes, wall art, throws, etc. Get a couch like the second and it's harder to change it up in the future and if you're anything like me, my taste changes ALL the time! ;)

  4. I like the cottage look. My only advice would be to spend the extra money and get your couch scotchgarded. It has been a life saver for me. Good luck with the hunt and let us see the result!
